Ontario’s Wildlife Damage Compensation Program:
What to Do If Your Livestock Has Been Injured or Killed by Wildlife
- Immediately notify the Livestock Valuer directly:
Lori Thornburg Phone: 705-206-8585 Email: jlfarms@icloud.com
If you are unable to contact theValuer, please report the incident to the Plummer Township Office at 705-785-3479.
- Do not remove the carcass from the attack site: the Valuer must examine the area for evidence to help determine the cause of the loss.
Secure the site from disturbance:
- Avoid walking in or around the area
- Place a tarp over the carcass
- Take photos of the scene (if a camera is available)
- The Valuer will make a full investigation and submit a written report to the Municipal Clerk within 7 business days of the on-site investigation. The Valuer’s report will give details regarding the extent of the damage to the livestock, and the amount of the compensation claim awarded. The Valuer will state in the report whether or not the livestock was killed or injured by any wildlife such as coyotes, wolves, bears, etc.
- If you do not agree with the Municipal Valuer’s report, you may appeal to the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), in writing, within 20 business days of receiving the Valuer’s report. A cheque or money order for $25, payable to the “Minister of Finance” must accompany the appeal. The $25 fee will be refunded, if the appeal is upheld.
